COPS
FOR KIDS PROGRAM
In
1996, Sheriff Bob Martinez created the "Cops for Kids"
program. The program is an
educational effort by deputies that focuses on areas of safety,
self-importance, gun safety, gang and drug awareness and peer pressure.
The
initial presentation of the program consists of the team members
appearing together in full uniform at each of the schools.
The team begins with introductions and talk a little bit
about the topic selected for that day.
The appropriate video will then be shown, followed by discussion
between the team and the students.
Approximately
six weeks after the initial presentation, and approximately every six to
eight weeks thereafter, the team will return to the same school during
the lunch hour. During this
visit, team members will wear embroidered "Cops for Kids"
shirt, jeans and tennis shoes.
During
this second visit, deputies will spend time eating lunch with the
students, and then participating in whatever lunch-time activities the
students are interested in. Deputies
will also encourage the students to get to know them as people, not just
as peace officers.
The
team members take pride in their ability to talk with the children
rather than at them. The
response has been wonderful. Now
that the program has been initiated, most of the deputies have seen the
positive change of the youth within the rural communities.
Sheriff
Prieto endorsed the program and plans are to expand it in the future.
A patrol vehicle was re-fitted and specially painted and equipped
through donations from local sponsors.
The vehicle has been a very distinctive component in the program,
and has been displayed at various functions, including Cruise Night.
