The Sheriff is charged with the responsibility of maintaining a jail for the County.  Having all the basic needs of a small city, the facilities provide for the care, custody and control of those incarcerated within them.  Inmates are offered special programs such as educational opportunities, work experience in a variety of areas, certified medical care, and if they qualify, they can serve their sentences at home by using our electronic home detention programs.

The Yolo County Detention Facilities, Monroe Detention and the Walter J. Leinberger Memorial, are located at 2420 East Gibson Road, Woodland, California 95776.

Monroe Detention Center

The Monroe Detention Center is the main jail for Yolo County.  It is a medium/maximum security facility rated to house prisoners of virtually every security classification.  Uncommon vigilance meets not only the inmate’s needs, but protects society from their negative behaviors.

Monroe Center is best described as a “new generation” jail.  This design concept maximizes the use of fresh air and sunlight, carpeting, muted colors, televisions and services that are provided directly to the inmate’s housing unit.  By utilizing this design concept and reducing the amount of inmate transport in and out of the housing unit, assaults, vandalism, escapes and other disturbances have been reduced.  These features, combined with our forward-thinking philosophy, promote normal behavior and allows inmates to depart our facilities in as good, or better condition than when they arrived.

Walter J. Leinberger Memorial Minimum Security Detention Facility

Leinberger Center is primarily a working facility, designed to house sentenced inmates who work at various city, county, and state agencies to reduce their jail time.  The work sites include Monroe Center (kitchen, landscape, laundry, and janitorial) Animal Services, Yolo County Roads Dept., West Sacramento Police Department, Court Holding, Fairgrounds, and Landfill.

Leinberger Center also acts as an overflow facility for Monroe Center. Potential inmates are carefully screened and must meet the criteria outlined in the policy and procedure for transfer to the Leinberger Center.  The safety of the public is paramount when considering inmates for transfer to Leinberger Center.

In addition to the work opportunities, inmates may also participate in programs designed to aid in a successful reentry into the community upon release from jail. These programs include alcoholics anonymous, narcotics anonymous, religious support, job placement, computer-aided education, G.E.D. tutoring and testing, anger management, and parenting classes.
