There’s
a new Posse in town.
2002
marked the return of a Sheriff’s Department legacy: the Yolo County
Sheriff’s Posse. This special unit is a program for mounted volunteers,
which will restore an element to the Department that has been missing for
a few years.
The
original Sheriff’s Posse, which was a component of the Reserve Program,
disbanded in the early 1990’s. The current Posse was a vision of Sheriff
Ed Prieto, which culminated from conversations with John Weber, a member
of the community. Sheriff Prieto recognized the value of a
mounted unit for use in a variety of assignments.
Although
back in formation for less than a year, the Yolo County Sheriff's
Department won first prize in the large horse division group at the 2003 Dixon May
Fair.
While
the Posse is initially going to be used for community service details,
such as participation in parades, shows, and special events, there are
plans to increase the responsibility of the unit in the future. Long term
plans include duties such as assisting the Department’s Search and
Rescue unit in looking for lost or stranded persons in remote areas of the
county, and assisting the deputies in patrolling such events as the county
fair.
If you
are interested in becoming a Posse member, or have other questions about
the Posse, please contact Sergeant Martin Torres at (530) 668-5296.
