The
Transportation section is responsible for all inmate movements,
including going to and from local courts, medical transports (both
emergency and scheduled appointments), all out of county and out of
state prisoner pickups, all prisoners sent to prison or special
programs, and all prisoner transports from state prison by court order.
Transportation staff also assists with security at the Yolo County Court
house, the Erwin Meier Administration Building, two off-site courtrooms,
and the Court Holding Facility.
Each
business day morning, the Sheriff’s bus, and vans transport inmates to
the holding facility, which was formerly the County Jail. They are
housed in the facility pending their appearance in court, then returned
to the Monroe Center after court. Two Deputy Sheriffs operate the
control room and monitor the movement of the inmates to and from their
appearances. In addition, they observe closed circuit television
monitors to building perimeters and all but two courtrooms.
Transportation
numbers continue to climb. Since April 2000, we have
transported an average of three to five inmates to medical appointments
each week. In addition, all working inmates who are injured while
working in one of the various county venues are transported to an off
site facility for their workers’ compensation injuries.
The unit is also
heavily involved in the T.O.P.I.C. (Transportation of Prisoners in
Cooperation) program. T.O.P.I.C. is in its second year of organized
cooperation. This program involves the transportation of prisoners
for and by other jurisdictions in order to reduce the need for redundant
traveling by two or more agencies. It is estimated that for every
transport mile traveled by this unit in support of other agencies, 18
transport miles are received in support of moving our own prisoners.
This program saves valuable monetary and personnel resources. The
program now reaches as far as Colorado and is expected to grow with
time.
