The Sheriff's Work Programs Section is responsible for managing the alternatives to incarceration offered by the Sheriff's Department.  Three programs were offered during the 2002-2003 fiscal year: Electronic Surveillance, Work Furlough, and the Sheriff's Working Inmate Program (SWIP). The SWIP allows an individual to work for the Yolo County Probation Department instead of serving time in jail.

Inmates with up to 45 actual days left in custody may be released from custody to perform outdoor work on this program as an alternative to completing their sentence in custody.

This is a voluntary program with the following criteria:

1.                  Inmates must be completely sentenced with no pending cases, outstanding warrants, or holds in any jurisdictions.

2.                   The court cannot have precluded the inmate from participation in the program.

3.                   Inmates who have failed the SWIP program within the last year may not be eligible.

4.                  Inmates with felony assault or felony sex charges do not meet the program guidelines.

5.                   Inmates with jail time stayed upon entry into a rehabilitation program are not eligible.

In order to participate in the program the inmate must pay a $25.00 application fee to the jail. Prior to beginning the work the inmate must pay $ 150.00 fee to the office of Revenue and Reimbursement. At the time the inmate is released to the program, more detailed information will be provided with regard to fees.
